Case Study: Developing a Single-Use Resectoscope for Urology

A handheld, disposable resectoscope and fluid management system designed to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using a minimally invasive transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) approach.

This single-use solution addressed unmet needs in urology by offering an innovative, cost-effective alternative to reusable systems, while reducing infection risk, shorten procedure time and simplifying workflow.

Industry

Urology

Impact

  • Supported preclinical validations and first-in-human clinical trials.
  • Manufactured ~500 disposable resectoscopes to support validation and trials.
  • Advanced the design and manufacturing process for a patented atraumatic tip.
  • Helped introduce a differentiated single-use resectoscope to the urology market.

Challenge

The client sought to develop a handheld, single-use resectoscope and fluid management system to improve the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The device needed to be intuitive, safe, and cost-effective while addressing unmet clinical needs in transurethral resection procedures.

Solution

As a contract developer and manufacturer, our team partnered with the client from concept through clinical validation. We:

  • Supported early product ideation and prototyping.
  • Manufactured approximately 500 devices to support preclinical and clinical studies at leading Hungarian universities.
  • Delivered multiple design and process innovations, including the patented atraumatic tip.
  • Scaled the design for manufacturing and prepared for commercial production.
